By adapting a vegan or even a vegetarian lifestyle you might start wondering about the leather that you’re wearing. You may have considered removing leather items from your wardrobe (That’s so awesome!) or you might have heard the question, when telling others about your vegetarian/vegan lifestyle, “But what about your shoes, aren’t they leather?… (We have all been there). Leather is everywhere. You probably even wear it yourself- purses, wallets, shoes, belts… As common as it is, it can be easy to forget where leather really comes from.

Something that I personally thought for many years was that leather is a waste product. “I mean isn’t leather just a byproduct of the meat industry?” Chances are you might have had the same thoughts. However fact is that animal skins being a “leftover” from slaughterhouses is just not the case. Leather can come from any number of animals: cows, pigs, sheep, goats, and, (to the horror of many westerners,) even dogs and cats. Exotic animals are most often used in the fashion industry: alligators, ostriches and kangaroos. Since leather is most often mislabeled, there’s just no way of knowing exactly who you are wearing.

At Levi Jones our vegan leather is made of polyurethane. By using vegan leather we ensure that the bags we produce are not made of the skins of dead animals plus vegan leather is easier on the planet. Turning skin into leather takes loads of energy and a toxic brew of chemicals, including mineral salts, coal-tar derivatives, formaldehyde, oils, dyes, and finishes; some of them cyanide-based. Tannery waste contains water-fouling salt, lime sludge, sulfides, acids, and other pollutants.

As horrific and cruel the leather industry is there are just so little alternatives on the market. The market for vegan leather alternatives is growing fast which is amazing! But we still felt like we were missing vegan leather bags that would make our heart beat faster. That’s when we decided to make our own vegan leather bags. We created a brand that we felt was missing in the market and called it Levi Jones Amsterdam. We started creating bags that we dreamed about and made them a reality.
